Today’s College Education

Greetings!

I am on my way home from Fort Collins CO, where I have been in meetings for two days with the Colorado State University Equine Science Advisory Board. I really enjoy this annual meeting for a number of reasons. First, it is the only advisory committee I’ve been on where they actually ask the committee for input and then enact what we say. The goal of the committee is to help CSU Equine remain the top 4-year equine program in the country and to turn out students that are not only employable, but who will enjoy great success in the horse industry. I think the program has made some progressive changes in the past few years that will keep it at the top. CSU Equine students can now get a minor in business (boy—I wish I’d had that!) and after graduating they can come back and receive a Masters in business in one year! I really wish that had been around when I was in college—but they barely even had computers then! What would you want out of an equine education?

The other reason I enjoy the committee meeting is because it is made up of some of the most influential people in the horse industry covering a broad range of sectors from Thoroughbred racing to reining to veterinary medicine to some of the top breeders and trainers out there. It’s fun to get to know these people and an honor to be a part of the deal

  1. While on subject of Olympics. Just now, For the track and field fans like me, Lo Lo Jones, the great American high hurdler, was well on her way to gold in women’s 100m hh, when she hit no. 9. She stayed up but forget a medal. Unbelievable. Shades of Gail Deavers in Barcelona.

  2. Yeah, just like I blogged the other day. If it ain’t online, it’s reeeeally difficult to catch. Think equestrian is hard to catch, try finding weightlifting. I did get to see an American and her mount make a perfect run thru most of the jumps only to have her horse get drastically distracted. He started throwing his head and flicking his ears inexplicably and then refuse to jump. It was a perfect run before and after except for that. Then I had to go pump gas. One of my three, two-bit jobs I have just to survive. Oh for the old days when I was successful. Oh well, do what ya gotta.
P.S. Julie, I just sent you a really cool insert from a farming newspaper. It’s called Mid-Atlantic Horse. Full of great articles, features and info. Look out for it. Enjoy.

  3. I too am disappointed in the lack of coverage for the “horse events”. Even when they are broadcasting, the people commenting are in New York. Go figure!!

  4. Julie, I have thoroughly enjoyed your RFD shows as well as the clinics I attended at Equine Affaire, Columbus, OH. You always come across as personable and teach riding techniques in an understandable way. I sure appreciate that! I have your series of riding DVD’s I’ve been going through. Great stuff!

I was able to catch a little bit of the eventing cross country and dressage last week. They had put them on the Oxygen channel and I just happened to catch the times. However, they were on at 6pm-8pm and that’s when we’re usually outside in the evenings. Yesterday I saw on the internet where the US had won the show jumping event, but I didn’t see when it was to be broadcast. Probably this past weekend, but we were happily busy with our oldest son’s wedding, so, everything else was on the back burner.
I always enjoy reading your blog!
