I am excited to be a new interactive member! Denali (16 yo TWH) and I have been together for four years. He is my first horse! We have learned a lot about each other since I brought him home.
In our first year, we experienced challenges. We had some miscommunication that resulted in two broken fingers. And without a pasture mate, Denali was not comfortable in his new home. So, until we could get things worked out, boarding was the only option. While being boarded, going for walks and riding was ok, but often Denali was not confident.
We started to look for help and learn. Slowly, we started to gain confidence and trust both on the ground and in the saddle.
Over the years, we have attended at least one clinic each summer. Last year, we started to zone in on more detailed riding to help Denali with his natural gaits by working with a local gaited trainer for a month. We also started to ride more consistently with a group, which was challenging at times.
Currently, we are able to do groundwork two times daily. I work full time so during the week riding is short, and more area style. When the days are longer, we can get some light riding in before dark. On the weekends, we get out on the trail as often as possible, usually for about 10 miles.
We also participate in competitive trail riding and mounted orienteering.
