Calm Your Horse During a Ride

Has your horse ever been anxious or amped up during a ride, and you just need to help him calm down a bit? Whether you’re on the trail or waiting to go in the ring at a competition, practice this calming maneuver at home so you have it in your toolbox when you need it later on.

  1. My friend gave me her horse because she could not ride anymore. We were fairly new riders and her horse had a lot of go, when she wanted to slow down she would put her in circles. We would give her some space because the mare would circle about as much as she would walk. I thought this was a normal thing for her. I started doing the same thing, I would just pull on the rein and circle her. I put no thought into it, I never thought about about her mouth and I am embarrassed to say I rode her that way for years. That was a few years ago and the mare has passed. I have watched other clinicians, bought their videos it just never clicked or I just quit trying. I found Julie Goodnight on YouTube and thought that makes sense to me. Thank you for making sense to me and I don’t want to quit trying, I want to be a better rider for me and my horse.

  2. This is such a great way to get the horses paying attention right away (assuming you’ve taught it well and keep it in your warm-ups or apply it on your trail rides or arena every time you ride to keep it fresh in your horse’s mind for when you need it! Anyone can learn to teach this exercise…it’s simple, builds in 3 steps and you’ve explained and demonstrated it so very well! Thanks, Julie.
